  • IPS and UPS stronger together

The principle role of an Isolated Power Supply (IPS) is to protect electrical loads from high voltage exposure. This is achieved by transferring power from one circuit to another without directly linking the two. The IPS identifies any ground faults at their earliest point enabling vital equipment to remain online.

IPS solutions form part of many critical power protection policies especially in healthcare facilities where they are a prerequisite for medical life-support systems, wet procedure settings and for equipment that falls in the ‘clinical 4 or 5 category’ or within ‘group 2’.

In order to meet industry standards, where power is required to be available within 0.5 seconds of a mains failure, as set out in HTM 06-01 and IEC60364-7-710, further resilience is provided with an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) system. A combined N+1 UPS with an IPS is regarded as the most resilient configuration that can be adopted.

The added layer of reliability that is provided by a UPS solution, is essential for healthcare facilities and can be supplied just as a standalone solution. However, an N+1 configuration is recommended within HTM 06-01 to ensure that a secondary and tertiary power source is always available.

Both IPS and UPS systems play a crucial role in the safe deployment of continuous power. That being said, very careful attention must be paid to their internal components. HTM 06-01 advises that UPS batteries need to have 10 year design life expectancy, which means that regular servicing of these is vital to ensure they are operating under optimum conditions and have not been damaged in any way. Other key components such as bypass switches, transformers and alarm monitors require routine maintenance checks. Identifying any potential failures of components will save avoidable system failures.

Power Control has provided emergency power for the healthcare market for nearly 30 years and is trusted by leading institutions across the country. The company’s nationwide team of engineers deliver all regular servicing and maintenance works, following strict site restrictions and out of hours protocols.

At present, Power Control understands that in some circumstances postponing routine service is unavoidable but the company has taken all the necessary safety precautions and is strictly following Government guidelines to be able to continue to carry out these essential IPS and UPS works.

Power Control Ltd works with businesses across the country and supplies, installs, commissions and maintains backup power solutions for all applications. For more information please visit www.powercontrol.co.uk, email [email protected] or call the office on 01246 431431

  • Working in parallel

In the event of a power outage, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) provides critical power to protect business continuity. The reliability of which is largely dependent on the configuration of the UPS solution. In order to achieve a high level of reliability a degree of redundancy should be incorporated.

Not only does redundancy reduce the number of single points of failure, but it also allows for future business expansion, something all businesses should plan for. Installing a capacity configuration will keep initial costs to a minimum, however, consistently running a UPS at 100% does not allow for a load inrush surge, a common occurrence when multiple applications are booted up at the same time, nor does it provide a margin for error.

Designed to increase capacity or UPS availability, a parallel redundant, or N+1, configuration comprises of two or more UPS units connected in parallel and running off common components. Each unit should be sized to be capable of supporting the entire load if required, however, in normal operating conditions should be running at no more than 70% capacity. This provides a level of redundancy and allows for the failure of one UPS unit within the configuration without putting the critical load at risk. The remaining units will automatically resume full load, enabling the damaged unit to be isolated and repaired.

As a scalable configuration, this design is commonly found in large business environments to increase reliability and ensure flexibility. The number of UPS systems that can be paralleled into a common bus is often left to the discretion of the UPS manufacturer. It is important to note however, that the UPS systems used in a parallel redundant configuration must be the same model and capacity, and from the same manufacturer.

Whether it be two UPS systems in parallel or ten, the increased fault clearing capabilities of a parallel redundant configuration ensures that short circuits are cleared twice ass efficiently without having to transfer the load to the bypass, avoiding unnecessary switching or tripping of supply switchgear.

The simplicity of the design and the ease of expansion allows for uncomplicated maintenance and makes it a cost effective and efficient total cost of ownership (TCO) UPS solution.

  • Does your School Comply with the Network Switching Standards?

The Department for Education (DfE) introduced the 'Network Switching Standards' in March 2022, and updated them in October 2022. These standards aim to assist schools and colleges in ensuring their networks can effectively support modern devices. As per the technical requirements outlined in the standards, educational institutions are mandated to equip their network switches with '2 power supplies', one of which must be a minimum of one UPS system (uninterruptible power supply).

A network switch serves as the cornerstone of a school's technological infrastructure by interconnecting all devices such as computers, printers, and wireless access points. They can also provide Power over Ethernet (PoE) powering devices such as CCTV cameras, wireless access points and IP phones.

Any malfunction in the switches or their power supply, can disrupt internet access throughout the premises, significantly impacting teaching and learning activities. It's also crucial for switches to be appropriately sized to manage the volume of data flowing through the network and configured to meet the specific needs of the facility.

The DfE Network Switching Standards encompass four key sections pertaining to switch performance, management, security, and resilience. Notably, the fourth standard emphasises the necessity for core network switches to be linked to at least one UPS to mitigate the impact of outages. Additionally, the standards mandate that network switches should offer fast, reliable, and secure connections to all users, both wired and wireless, and feature security measures to safeguard users and data against unauthorised access.

In the event of a mains power failure or brownout, a UPS provides instantaneous backup power to the switches, ensuring uninterrupted teaching and learning activities. Moreover, it offers protection against power surges, eliminating concerns about data loss due to power anomalies.

Regarding compliance with the DfE Network Switching Standards, the Department acknowledges the challenges associated with upgrading entire school networks at once. Therefore, instead of imposing a strict deadline, they advise schools and colleges to meet the standards during upgrades to underperforming or unsupported solutions. IT staff are encouraged to monitor the status of the school's network equipment regularly and conduct scheduled maintenance visits to identify the need for network upgrades.

Recommended UPS for School and College Network Switches

Drawing on 30 years of experience, Power Control would recommend a rackmountable UPS system as the most suitable and cost effective solution for backing up switches. These seamlessly integrate into network racks, with the size and number of UPS units required depending on the overall power requirements of the network equipment, typically ranging between 1000VA and 10kVA.
