    In power for 25 years!
  • Powering distribution centres for 24/7 operation

Distribution centres around the country have never been under more pressure. The media has focused mainly on commending our NHS and the incredible service that they are providing but what about the unprecedented efforts being displayed by distribution hubs, delivery drivers and supermarkets?

Focusing specifically on food and medical supplies, which are presently the most critical items, distribution centres are the epicentre of fulfilment. Relying heavily on automated machinery from stock management systems and production lines to pickers, packers and conveyors, many of these facilities will also house freezers, chillers and other essential equipment – all of which require a constant power source.

With the requirement for 24/7 operation greater than ever, any unplanned downtime could be catastrophic not just in financial losses but the effect on the entire supply chain could also impact consumer welfare.

Facility managers and distribution centre operators need to ensure that they have resilient power protection strategies in place to mitigate any unforeseen interruptions. With greater strain being placed on the country’s grid, there will be more fluctuations in mains power. These spikes, surges, sags and even possible complete failures, could affect the performance of essential equipment and result in disrupted operations.

Backup power solutions not only provide power protection during complete power failures but also help to regulate power and deliver a constant, clean source of power. It is not unusual to see smaller, single phase UPS systems being used to support individual lines of equipment such as a conveyor belt or automatic door and also have a larger, more centralised UPS solution supporting other applications such as IT and telecom infrastructure.

Power Control Ltd works with distribution centres across the country and supplies, installs, commissions and maintains backup power solutions for all applications. For more information please visit www.powercontrol.co.uk, email [email protected] or call the office on 01246 431431

  • Power Control announced as winners of DCS awards 2019

Leading Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) specialists, Power Control Ltd, has been announced as the winner of the Data Centre Solutions (DCS) Awards 2019 for the New Design/Build Data Centre Project of the Year category in this year’s DCS Awards.

Located at the heart of London’s financial district, the glitzy awards ceremony took place at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel, on Thursday 16th May, where it was revealed that data centre industry experts voted for Power Control’s recent supply and install project for leading design and build operator coolDC to win the acclaimed award.

coolDC approached Power Control with the requirements of an increased uninterruptible power supply and battery capacity without any disruption, downtime or switching.  The team at Power Control provided a modular system design that enabled coolDC to scale up as its load requirements increased and thus increase efficiency, a key part of the brief. The modular design accommodated for additional space in the battery rack allowing for the addition of further battery strings as and when required without any downtime.

The team enjoyed a fantastic evening and would like to thank everyone who voted for Power Control in this competitive category.

  • Data centres; at the heart of sustaining business continuity

The world is going into lockdown. Country by country we are being forced to reevaluate our daily routines and how we do business. The number of employees now working from home has reached an unprecedented level, which is only set to increase in the days and weeks to come.

With many businesses temporarily pushing pause, our economic landscape is shifting dramatically. At the heart of trying to sustain business continuity are data centres. Recognised ‘essential infrastructure’, data centres are under more pressure than ever to continue to provide uninterrupted services.

The complexity of our digital framework is all connected through data centres. They form the central point of managing, receiving, processing and storing digital information. All our online activities from online shopping, posting on social media to downloading files and emailing, all involve at least one data centre. Where multiple transactions are involved or where there is supply chain cross over, this relies on data passing from one data centre to another. The sustained operation of all these facilities will keep us connected.

However, anticipated variants to power quality coupled with the added pressure placed on data centres could have quite costly consequences if not managed correctly. Preventing data centre downtime is more crucial than ever before.

Data centre owners, like many others, have had to make some difficult decisions; choosing where to invest and what to invest in. Recommendations from the industry advisory channel, the Uptime Institute, includes a review of essential maintenance works. The guidance given is to ‘consider the consequences of deferred maintenance, as it may increase risk of component or system failure’. This advice should be applied to all critical equipment including backup power supplies.

The role of a UPS in a data centre is to guarantee a continuous supply of power in the event of a mains power disturbance or total failure. Due to the vital role UPS systems play within a data centre, they are without question one of the priority items.

It is recommended that all UPS solutions within any sized data centre have a routine maintenance check and that any system over eight years old be considered for replacement. The overriding message is to act now and not get caught out later.

Power Control Ltd works with data centres across the country and supplies, installs, commissions and maintains backup power solutions for all applications. The company holds over £2million of stock including three phase UPS solutions up to 300kVA. Its team of nationwide engineers are also available to respond to immediate call outs. For more information please visit www.powercontrol.co.uk, email [email protected] or call the office on 01246 431431
