  • Stay safe, stay connected

Covid-19 has well and truly taken over the country, and much of Europe. The coronavirus started out as a fast spreading infectious disease in Wuhan, China and has now become a global pandemic affecting not just tens of thousands of individuals but businesses as well.

Whilst working from home has gained popularity over the years, with approximately 1.5million Brits already doing so, no one could have predicted that by 2020 the country would see over 70% of its employed population working from home.

Now with many businesses being forced to allow their staff to work from home, are we prepared? Today’s working practices depend heavily on digital interface and aside from standard hardware requirements, such as laptops and phones, companies also need to look beyond just the basics.

Setting up a workspace at home for the odd day is very different to establishing a secure, long term home office environment. Unprecedented strain will be placed on residential networks, which could ultimately result in further fluctuations to the grid. This inevitably will affect power supplies, which is why savvy businesses are making further investments and issuing backup power systems to their employees, in particular, to those that rely on being on the network.

Simple plug ‘n’ play UPS systems will not only support the obvious; PC’s and telephones but should also be considered for WIFI routers. Working from home is disruptive enough without having to accommodate even more downtime.

With so much focus on working from home, it is also important that businesses do not neglect their back offices and comms rooms. Power Control Ltd is advising all companies, big and small to have their UPS systems checked to ensure they are in optimum condition. Should offices be told to shutdown, these critical power supplies will play an essential role in the uninterrupted performance of severs and other vital office equipment.

  • The five nine's of uptime

Hosting agreements have started featuring a demand for 100% of uptime. The reality of this is something debated by many data centre owners and clients. How is uptime measured and more importantly, how can maximum uptime be achieved?

Uptime is a measure of reliability and is used by those in the industry to describe how long the infrastructure has been online and available for use. Furthermore, it is measured as a percentage against timespan which means 100% annual uptime would infer that a business’s infrastructure was working continuously with no outages for one year, something that not all businesses accomplish. The term ‘five nines’ originated in telecommunications and has spread across a plethora of power-hungry industries including data centres.

Outside of data centres and facilities management, most businesses find it challenging to achieve a 99.9% uptime throughout the year. In 2017 one of the social media giants reported almost seven days of downtime which translates as only 98% availability. With this in mind, asking IT managers to achieve a goal of 99.99% uptime or more may initially seem daunting but there are ways of making it achievable.

It is important to remember that ‘the five nines of uptime’ is an industry buzz word by which data centre availability is measured. It refers to 99.999% system availability over a one year period. To put this into perspective it means just over five minutes of downtime across the year.

Rob Mather, Director at Power Control commented, “Although originally seen as a figure that the server industry aspires to, it is not necessarily an appropriate measure of UPS efficiency. The effectiveness of a UPS should not be measured by outage duration, it should instead be measured by the number of outages. An outage no matter how short is still a costly event for any business and owners should be advised to install the highest level of resilience possible to achieve consistent uptime.”

This level of system uptime can be achieved by adding UPS redundancy. Placing a single UPS frame into a system plus system (2N) or similar redundancy configuration creates two separate power paths and ensures no single points of failure. In this configuration, an engineer is able to carry out maintenance without a need to power down the load or bypass the UPS. Both modular UPS systems such as the Huawei UPS5000 and standalone UPS systems such as the Borri Ingenio range can be configured in a 2N redundancy.

Depending on the application, striving to achieve five nines may not be necessary. The difference between the uptime of a four nines system compared to five is approximately 45 minutes. Therefore, a business case to improve availability from four to five nines must exceed the cost of 45 minutes’ worth of downtime. Unless the UPS is supporting an application requiring 24/7 uptime, a lower, cheaper level of redundancy may suffice.

It stands to reason that the more nines added, the more availability and uptime a business will receive. The amount goes from being measured in hours to minutes, a difference that could be crucial to certain industries. Power Control has over 25 years’ experience of delivering UPS solutions in varying levels of redundancy to the client’s specification. Power Control is trusted by global UPS manufacturers to install, commission and maintain their UPS systems and provides solutions that not only meet the business needs of not but in the future too.

  • What is battery autonomy?

When sizing for an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) there are a number of considerations, one of which is the required battery autonomy which refers to the amount of time a UPS battery will last at a specified load level in the event of a power outage. This could be from a few minutes to a few hours with an increased autonomy being achieved by additional batteries.

As well as conditioning the power supply, the main requirement of a UPS is to provide a continuous supply of electricity to critical loads during a power outage. This means the batteries are the most important aspect of an uninterruptible power supply as they provide the power source in the event of a mains failure. An old or badly maintained battery could affect the autonomy time of the UPS.

Other factors affecting the autonomy will depend on the UPS application and can include the presence of a generator, server shutdown time and the time it takes to re-apply power to the UPS system. The autonomy time of a UPS is usually calculated with the UPS system running and full load capacity to ensure a battery can fulfil at a high enough capacity.

Although with VRLA batteries it is possible to support loads from several minutes to several hours, the cost of a large battery at a high load level can sometimes mean that a generator is more appropriate.

The stage at which the battery is at in its design life is an aspect of battery autonomy that is often overlooked. A battery at the beginning of its design life, i.e. day 1, will be able to provide its fill design capacity. As a battery ages it loses capacity as the chemicals and plates within the battery age. A good quality battery will usually have a 10 year design life. An initial oversizing of a battery may occur if the battery is sized for an ‘end of life’ autonomy, meaning the battery should still provide its required autonomy at the end of its design life.

The battery design life should not be confused with the life expectancy of a battery as it relies on different factors.

  • Power Control has been shortlisted for the SDC awards

Power Control Ltd is thrilled to have been announced as finalists in the renowned SDC awards in one of their prestigious Storage, Digitalisation and Cloud categories.

Now in its tenth year, the SDC Awards consists of many broad categories divided into six themes, allowing companies to receive recognition for their work in the IT sector.

As a leading critical infrastructure projects provider, Power Control entered into, and has been shortlisted for the Hybrid Infrastructure Project of the Year for its role in operationalising an innovative, off-grid and emission free hydrogen fuel cell which was used to charge electric vehicles (EV) at a recent UK car festival.

The hydrogen fuel cell required an energy efficient micro-grid to provide a ‘dummy’ load in order for it to startup and for the inverter to recognise the grid. The micro-grid was made up of 2x125kVA Borri Ingenio Plus UPS systems which feature green conversion technology and also caters for a sudden increase in load demand. Whilst it would have been possible to use a generator to provide the grid connection, the focus of this project was to deliver green energy in an innovative way.

  • Power Control named finalist in London Construction Awards 2019

Prominent UPS solutions provider, Power Control Ltd, is delighted to have been shortlisted for two categories in this year’s London Construction & Design Awards. As the most prestigious construction awards in London, they recognise the front runners of innovation and sustainability within the industry.

After winning the New Design/Build Data Centre category of the esteemed DCS Awards earlier in the year for a forward thinking, modular UPS installation, Power Control hope to continue their success at these awards.

Power Control is honoured to be placed alongside some of the biggest names in the industry. Fully committed to sustainability, the company has not only been shortlisted in the Sustainable Construction category but also the Smart Technology/Solution of the Year category for its contribution to operationalising an innovative and completely off grid, hydrogen fuel cell charging system.

The project saw Power Control, in partnership with a renewable energy giant, design a containerised microgrid using uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to create a stable 230V. Enough to imitate a mains grid supply and start up the fuel cell inverter.

Whilst it would have been possible to use a generator to provide the grid connection, the focus of this project was to deliver green energy in an innovative way. The UPS and fuel cell combination is virtually silent and emission free in comparison to a generator setup. With a large focus on cutting carbon emissions, planning permission for a generator backup supply to such projects and events is often refused because of noise pollution and fumes.

Further to this, the microgrid also catered for a sudden increase in load demand. For example, if 100KW is required from the fuel cell there would be a slight delay in provided that power. The UPS bridges that gap and provides the power instantaneously.

As the biggest industry event of the year, the London Construction Awards is the perfect platform for Power Control to showcase its project specialisms. The glittering ceremony will bring together solution providers, contractors, architects, civil engineers, developers and local authorities.

All winners and runners up will be announced during event, which takes place on the 27th November 2019 at the Novotel, West London.
