  • HTM compliant UPS to meet NHS framework agreements

The medical industry has seen an unparalleled reliance on its services this year, which places a greater emphasis on the need for a dependable and consistent supply of power. Equipment failure due to a loss of power is not tolerated in such a critical environment where it could jeopardise patient and staff safety.

To ensure continuity between all healthcare critical power infrastructures, the industry developed the Healthcare Technical Memorandum (HTM), a document prepared by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

The HTM 06-01 focusses on the supply and distribution of electrical services, highlighting the importance of reducing the probability of equipment failure during a primary mains power outage through secondary and tertiary power backup systems.

Recommended in the HTM 06-01 and required by IEC60364, where power is required to be available within 0.5 seconds of a mains failure, further resilience must be provided by a tertiary power supply – a UPS system (uninterruptible power supply).

The minimum level of redundancy recommended in the HTM 06-01 is N+1, this configuration adds additional reliability to the critical infrastructure. If one UPS was to fail during a power outage, the other would support the load until the primary power source is once again available. A combined N+1 UPS with an IPS (Isolated Power Supply) is regarded as the most resilient configuration that can be adopted.

Guidance in the HTM goes further than only providing guidance on the location and configuration of UPS systems. Very careful attention must be paid to their internal components. HTM 06-01 advises that UPS batteries must have a design life expectance of 10 years, which means that regular servicing of these is vital to ensure they are operating under optimum conditions and to their required potential. Other key components such as capacitors, fans, transformers, and bypass switches also require routine maintenance checks. Identifying any potential weaknesses of the components that could lead to avoidable system failures in the future.

Power Control is keen to remind NHS businesses that its emergency power systems are recognised as providing the NHS with comprehensive, compliant and innovative solutions to meet strict guidelines set out by both the SBS (Hard facilities Framework Agreement) and NOE CPC (North of England Commercial Procurement Collaborative) whilst being committed to providing the NHS value for money.

  • Modern UPS technologies contributes to lower energy expenditure for FM managers

Energy consumption remains a hot topic across all business sectors and features high on the government agenda. Earlier this year the European Commission funded a project called Horizon 2020, which was established with the principle aim to promote greater efficiency in data centres and IT facilities. Initiatives like this, coupled with the continued rise in hardware density means that facility managers remain under growing pressure to not only achieve greater operational efficiency but also reduce capital expenditure.

Horizon2020 directly addresses the research released by The European Commission Joint Research Centre in February 2019, which stated that the ICT sectors generates up to 2% of global CO² emissions and predicted that the carbon footprint and energy demands of the industry are set to grow significantly in the coming years.

With this in mind, the responsibility to reduce both energy costs and carbon footprint, lies with us all. Facility managers are however, at the core and are ultimately accountable for sourcing the most appropriate and efficient equipment. The key to achieving overall site efficiency is understanding the performance of IT loads and managing the effective application of these. This extends from initial user hardware such as computers and phone systems, through to site applications; lighting, door entry systems and CCTV, production and plant equipment and emergency power systems.

Focusing on the latter, the successful deployment of modern UPS technologies can significantly contribute to lower energy expenditure. It goes without saying that modular UPS systems deliver the most flexibility and can achieve maximum efficiency. Modular UPS solutions offer a ‘scale as you grow’ approach, which means that they only need to operate for the current load requirements. Power demand is then reflected in UPS capacity as and when it is needed, without wasting initial capital, space and capacity overheads.

Modular UPS systems also provide a smaller footprint, easier manageability and greater availability throughout its operational life. The design of modular UPS systems, such as the Huawei UPS5000-E series and Legrand KeorMod and TriMod range, integrate hot swappable power, bypass, control and monitor modules, allowing them to be removed or replaced without disturbance to the load. This in turn can mean a more reliable and efficient power supply.

UPS redundancy can also be easily achieved with spare modules used in the same framework. A single UPS power frame accommodates multiple power modules and can be arranged in an N+1 redundancy configuration enabling a faulty module to be hot swapped without the need to power down the load or bypass the UPS and expose the load to unprotected input power. This approach minimises repair time and maximises power availability, with up to 99.999% (five nines) of availability being possible.

It is important not to overlook traditional static UPS systems, which often come with the misconception that they are grossly inefficient due to their makeup. This may be true for units over 10 years old but today’s static UPS systems such as those from Borri Spa boast impressive efficiencies of up to 98% and when deployed for the correct application, in the right environment, this efficiency level can be easily achieved.

For as long as energy consumption remains on government manifestos, facility managers will continue to be under pressure to source leaner systems and adopt more efficient processes. The greatest way to achieve this is to view IT infrastructure in its entirety and not in isolation. Businesses like Power Control Ltd have been working with facility managers for over 25 years to deliver best practice with the latest power protection technologies. Power Control looks at the complete power protection landscape, environmental factors and physical infrastructure and provides solutions that meet exact business needs not just now but in the future with a clear TCO outlook.

Power Control is a leading power protections solutions provider offering complete project management, a full portfolio of backup power systems and maintenance services including free site surveys. For more information please visit email [email protected]

  • Out of sight, but not out of mind

Commercial properties have been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and with landlords facing nearly £1billion in empty property tariffs, renewed pressure has been placed on Rishi Sunak to extend and reform business rates.

An estimated quarter of the country’s office spaces and retail units have been vacated and left empty over the last 12 months, which according to thisismoney has meant that commercial property is the worst selling, open ended asset of 2020. These facts focus primarily on the physical building structures but what about the assets within them? Looking beyond the furnishings, many of these facilities will have invested huge sums of money in their electrical infrastructures.

Assets including security, fire suppression and emergency backup power all need to be considered. Looking specifically at backup power equipment such as UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) systems these cannot be left dormant.

Despite the positive outcomes from the vaccine rollout and the recent release of the Prime Minister’s roadmap to recovery’, there is still a lot of uncertainty for commercial landlords. With retailers forced to shut up shop, many will end up permanently closing their doors and as huge proportions of the country continue to abandon their commutes in favour of working remotely, they will undoubtedly be tempted to leave behind the nine-to-five grind for good. This sets precarious timelines for when properties will be occupied again.

With the list of unknowns unquantifiable and the outlook is temporarily bleak but landlords need to remain vigilant and must continue to service their properties and safeguard their holdings. In reference to UPS systems, if these are left idle they could cause long term property damage. Their internal batteries are extremely hazardous and if they are exposed to unsuitable conditions or high temperatures, this could be resultant of significant damage and in extreme cases risk of fire.

Less dangerous but equally significant, is to consider when the UPS unit was last serviced and of course if it is still operational. Often housed out of sight, UPS systems can often be forgotten. If these emergency backup solutions are still being used to support essential facility applications such as security systems, emergency lighting and door access, it is imperative that they are checked to ensure they are still operating as they should be. UPS maintenance is recommended at least every six months.

In cases where there are permanent property closures, landlords should consider appropriate UPS decommissioning protocols. UPS systems that are 6kVA and above should have a technical condition report carried out. If the UPS solution is to remain in situ but disused, a make safe service is also recommended. For those selling property on, it is important to remember that the UPS can be included as an asset and a condition report will add value to the business. These reports will confirm the current performance of systems, outline the existing environment and give detailed guidance on best practice.

Power Control is offering all commercial property owners free UPS condition reports and decommissioning services. The company has provided emergency power for businesses of all sizes since 1994 and is trusted by leading institutions across the country. The company’s nationwide team of engineers deliver all regular servicing and maintenance works, following strict site restrictions and out of hours protocols.

Adhering to rigorous health and safety protocols, Power Control’s team of engineers are well versed in following Government guidelines and taking necessary precautions to carry out these essential UPS works.

Working with businesses of all sizes across the country, Power Control supplies, installs, commissions and maintains backup power solutions for all applications. For more information please visit www.powercontrol.co.uk, email [email protected] or call the office on 01246 925936

  • Case study video – Amito data centre

Ed Butler, CEO of Amito, talks about how Power Control helped the data centre to achieve an industry leading PUE of 1.2, and his experience in working with Power Control in this video case study.

    Video transcript:
I’m Ed Butler, I’m the CEO of Amito and I’m also the founder so it’s a business I started some time ago now back in 2011

Amito is a digital infrastructure provider, we focus on data centres and also cloud hosting. We operate Readings largest data centre and we also have a cloud platform in 27 data centres around the world.

Our Power Control relationship goes back to 2012, or maybe even slightly earlier. The relationship was established in the design phase of the data centre and it’s been in place ever since

Energy efficiency is absolutely key, apart from the obvious environmental concerns with energy usage, it’s a huge economic impact so the energy usage of a data centre is roughly 80% of the total cost. If you look at all the components in a data centre where you have inefficiencies. The UPS is probably the second largest contributor to that and that something that we have focussed on and why we have made this investment.

We have gone from a static configuration which is essentially a monolithic big block of UPS to a modular configuration where it’s more akin to a single frame that has individual small UPS put into. So it’s got a number of benefits for us, probably the benefit that we are most keen on is the redundancy and resiliency. In that configuration, if one of the modules fails, it doesn’t have any operational impact and that’s really great from a customer service point of view.

There are 2 key drivers behind that, 1 is people are understandably concerned about their carbon footprint so they want to be choosing a data centre that is carbon neutral and secondly, the energy cost is the biggest component of a data centre so we believe we have one of the most efficient enterprise-class colocation data centres in the UK. Being one of the most efficient means we can pass those efficiencies on to our end users and they end up getting a better service and it’s a more economic alternative.

What we’ve seen with the new UPS has been a significant reduction in physical footprint so we have more space in our plant rooms to do other things. There is also less weight and it’s one of those considerations that goes into a data centre in terms of structural and fabric costs. Even smaller things like lower noise, lower airflow speeds. So it’s one of those things where you have a virtues circle where all of those things feed into each other.

The primary focus was energy efficiency. We’ve gone from operating at a PUE of 1.20 and I should make it clear that’s an actual PUE that we are operating at, and we’ve gone to 1.12. The PUE saving translates into energy reduction and we’ve quantified it in terms of CO2 and its equivalent to about 110,000kg of CO2 reduction per year. So it’s a really significant environmental impact as well.

We’ve been through a number of different design changes to the data centre and improvements. Power Control has been present throughout that period so I’d say it’s a very good relationship.

  • Legrand UPS demand continues

Following a hat-trick of consecutive orders for the Legrand Trimod HE UPS, Power Control Ltd is keen to showcase why this particular high density, modular system has gained so much popularity.

Relatively new to the UK UPS market, the Legrand Trimod HE is a sophisticated three phase UPS (uninterruptible power supply) solution, which delivers a unique modular framework. The individual single phase modules offer a rated power from 10 – 80kW. The modules themselves are redundant, self configuring and include a plug and play connection system for easy maintenance and future expansion. In addition they are also lighter weight and smaller making transportation and the overall UPS installation easier.

The sophisticated design of the Trimod HE UPS solution makes it incredibly versatile where it can not only supply three independent single phase lines, with a different operating time priority allocated for each one, but it is also able to offer three different input/output configurations within a single cabinet. For example, it could have three phase in/three phase out, single phase in/single phase out, three phase in/single phase out or single phase in/three phase out.

These configurations provide maximum flexibility whilst ensuring high redundancy levels. The detailed construction of the Trimod HE UPS allows for varying redundancy levels to be set. This is further supported with the addition of multiple control boards, which facilitates the control of separate battery packs and hot swappable modules.

Another key feature of the Trimod HE UPS, which has caught the attention of many in the industry is its dual input function option. Offering up to 80kW, the cabinet can be fed two separate AC sources.

Legrand is renowned for its heavy investment in research and development, which has enabled it to engineer first class solutions that deliver industry leading reliability, quality and technical performance. The Legrand Trimod HE has achieved one of the highest certified efficiency ratings of 96%, whilst also delivering a unity power factor.

As expected the Trimod HE UPS includes all standard operating features such a Eco and EPS modes, frequency converter, bypass control, multi-lingual menu and events log. With a small footprint and MTTR friendly design, it is unsurprising that the uptake of the Trimod HE UPS has been so positive.

Power Control was appointed the UK modular UPS partner for Legrand last year and has since worked closely with the Legrand team to deliver fully cohesive solutions to the industry. With nearly 30 years of experience, Power Control has forged valuable relationships with leading contractors, consultants and UPS manufacturers. The company has an extensive single and three phase UPS product portfolio. It includes leading edge standalone and modular technologies, which are all fully supported by in-house project management and nationwide maintenance services.

  • Case study video – COOL DC | Power Control

CEO, Tim Chambers and Operations Director, Angela Meah of coolDC explain their experience working with Power Control in this video testimonial.

    Video transcript:

In terms of coolDC, the name, what it means and our tagline – making the data centre world more cool, people assume that it’s about cooling and our cooling process, and it is in a way but not in the way that people perhaps think.

It’s a play on words, it’s a paradox because we’re attempting to make the data centre world more cool but we are trying to do that by operating at higher temperatures.

My name is Tim Chambers, I am the CEO of cool Data Centres. I have been involved in the data centre industry for over 30 years. A mixture of communications systems, the design, the build, the operations of data centre site.

My role within coolDC is to design energy efficient data centres for HPC clients and build financial business cases to allow these builds to take place.

My secondary role within coolDC is to inspire my team to drive the boundaries of engineering in areas such as liquid cooling, battery storage and energy reuse.

When we started looking for a UPS provider, the main drivers for us to find someone with experience but more importantly was the willingness to listen.

What we didn’t want to do is get dragged down in to old designs and old ideas. It was very important that the new data centres could actually take advantage of the changes within the UPS and changes of the data centre design.

One of the frustrations we had at the very start was that everyone wanted to support just the existing CHP supply in stage one and also support it with fixed UPS units which is totally against the grain of what we are trying to do.

The main part of the data centre design was to actually build an expandable and modular unit therefore fixed units were not the answer for us but unfortunately it was where everyone was trying to push us.

The Huawei units are very good for what we are trying to do where we are trying to build in modular fashion over around half a meg.

The beauty of the Huawei units are that it fits that there are some ways we would like to improve and I’m sure Huawei are trying to improve that and I’m sure working with Power Control we can drive that forward but as a unit it fits our building block quite nicely.

What went well from the Huawei for us is the fact that it did allow us to actually modularise and provide resilience at every stage.

We were looking for the benefit of running something that we could run very small at the start of the build and show that we could expand it and therefore keep the PUE low as the actual site grew so we could grow the units as and when we needed.

I think the major point of us working with power control is the designs are going to change, the plan is that we improve, we improve, we improve, therefore the UPS is a major part of this and working with Power Control we are confident that we can find bigger and better products.

The relationship with Power Control works really well. We have a connection at director level through Rob, who was originally involved in the project we have now got a dedicated account manager called Sam who works very well with the account and looks to how we are going to innovate in the future.

We also have great support from Chris, the engineer who helped us through the FAT test and also helped us with the installation on site.

The installation went very well it was managed very well from a communications point of view between Angela and Richard. Everybody turned up on time and everything was installed very quickly and very professionally.
