South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Overview

South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) is one of the UK’s leading providers of mental health services, delivering vital care across multiple hospitals sites. To strengthen the resilience of its critical infrastructure, the trust partnered with Power Control to deliver two separate Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) upgrade projects. One at Maudsley Hospital in Camberwell and the other at Bethlem Royal Hospital.
Although delivered independently, both projects shared a common objective: to safeguard essential IT, communications, and clinical systems by replacing aging UPS equipment with modern, high performance solutions. All without disrupting patient care.

Maintaining continuous power within a mental health environment is fundamental. From patient records and diagnostic systems to crisis response communications, uninterrupted access to digital infrastructure is essential for clinical coordination, patient safety and operational efficiency.

Site Two: Bethlem Royal Hospital

About the Site

Bethlem Royal Hospital, also part of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, is a leading centre for patient centred mental healthcare care. This hospital provides specialist services for conditions including psychosis, depression and anxiety, and plays an important role in research and education.

The Challenge

Unlike Maudsley Hospital, Bethlem Royal required the replacement of two UPS units supporting critical digital systems including patient records, diagnostic tools, and communications networks. The outdated systems posed a high risk to operation resilience.

Power Control was required to design a custom rack solution that could be accommodated in the room adjacent to the UPS systems. Due to access restrictions, the installation would need to be completed in a two-day timeframe and during non-working hours.

The Solution

Power Control installed 1x Legrand Keor MOD 75kVA UPS unit together with 1x Borri, a brand of Legrand, Ingenio Compact 20kVA UPS. In addition, a bespoke 5 tier, 3 row cladded rack was installed to house the associated UPS batteries. This was designed to fit the specific dimensions of the room adjacent to where the two UPS systems were located.

The Legrand Keor MOD 75kVA is a three-phase, on-line double conversion UPS with PWM high-frequency technology. An ideal solution for all critical applications, the UPS provides a 45 minute autonomy at full load.
Neat and easy to use, the Borri Ingenio Compact 20kVA, also offers online double conversion technology combined with parallel redundant configuration. Designed for critical applications, including networks and servers, the UPS offers 5 minutes of  battery backup under full load conditions.

"Following the installation of our new Keor MOD UPS system, I've been delighted with the seamless transition and exceptional support provided by Power Control. Their Gold Support Maintenance Package gives us complete peace of mind, allowing our staff to focus on delivering exceptional care with confidence that our power protection is in expert hands. The bespoke solution perfectly addressed our specific requirements while ensuring minimal disruption during implementation."
